The Hydrographic Institute

The Hydrographic (IH) Institute, an agency of the Portuguese Navy, was established by Decree-Law No. 43177 of September 22, 1960.

The Hydrographic (IH) Institute, an agency of the Portuguese Navy, was established by Decree-Law No. 43177 of 22 September 1960. The IH works in direct dependence on the Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy, and the relative competence the definition of strategic guidelines, as well as the monitoring of their execution, exercised by the Minister of National Defense in articulation with the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education and with the Minister of the Sea. The IH is recognized as a State Laboratory, enjoying administrative and financial autonomy.

Mission:

The IH's fundamental mission is to ensure activities related to the sciences and techniques of the sea, with a view to their application in the military area, and to contribute to the country's development in the scientific and marine environment defense areas.

To be a reference center for knowledge and research on the sea.
