The Director General of the Hydrographic Institute
The Director General is the main responsable for the global activities (CEO) of the Hydrographic Institute.
Rear Admiral Ramalho Marreiros was born in Lisboa, in 1966. He joined the Navy in 1984 and graduated from the Escola Naval in 1989. He holds a specialization in Hydrography, a Master of Engineering in Geodesy and Geomatics at the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and a Phd in Surveying Engineering at University of Porto, Portugal.
As junior officer, he served on the frigate N.R.P. “Captain Sacadura Cabral” and was second-in-charge of the Hydrographic Brigade. He served on board the Hydrographic Ship N.R.P. “Almeida Carvalho”. He was the Officer in Charge of the 2nd Hydrographic Brigade, and Officer in Charge of the Hydrographic Equipment, Systems and Methods Department at Hydrographic Division of the Navy Hydrographic Institute and instructor at the Specialization Course in Hydrography.
He was Commander of the Hydrographic Ship N.R.P. “D. Carlos I”. He returned to the Navy Hydrographic Institute as an assistant of the Technical Director, Commander of the Hydrographic Ships Group and Director of the School of Hydrography. He also served at the Escola Naval as Academic Dean and Professor of Hydrography.
After the General Staff Course, he was Sub-Director of Hydrographic Institute and served at the Military University Institute as coordinator of the Military Behaviour, Leadership, Logistics, Economics and Management Department.
As Commodore, still at the Military University Institute, he was the Head of the Research and Development Centre, Director of the General Staff Course and Scientific Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Military Sciences.
After promotion to Rear Admiral he is the General Director of the Hydrographic Institute since 15 October 2022.
Rear Admiral Ramalho Marreiros has published technical articles in the subject of marine sciences and military sciences. He has received several commendations and has been awarded with one Exemplar Behaviour Medal (gold), one Naval Cross (1st class) one Military Merit Medal (2nd class) and five Distinguished Services Medals (silver).
