NATO Maritime GEOMETOC Centre of Excellence
The NATO Maritime GEOMETOC COE is an independent multinational entity, accredited and activated on August 26, 2021 by the North Atlantic Council. It emerged from the GEOMETOC Center of the Portuguese Navy, founded in 2017 to provide support to naval and maritime operations. The Portuguese Centre had its origin in the knowledge and experience of the Instituto Hidrográfico, an institution with more than 60 years of excellence in maritime research, especially in the areas of geospatial information, hydrography and oceanography.
Located at the Instituto Hidrográfico, the Maritime GEOMETOC was the 28th entity to be accredited as a Centre of Excellence by NATO. Portugal, Romania, Spain and Turkiye are currently the participating nations, with Portugal playing the role of framework nation. The Centre supports NATO's transformation in the areas of geospatial, meteorological and oceanographic sciences, with the aim of improving the knowledge of the maritime situational awareness and the operational effectiveness of the Alliance and its partners.
