Visit of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic during the 700th anniversary of the Navy.
The Hydrographic Institute (HI) received, on December 5, 2017, the visit of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Navy.
On arrival, the Head of State was received by the Minister of National Defense, José Azeredo Lopes, by the Chief of Staff of the Navy and National Maritime Authority, Admiral António Silva Ribeiro, and by the Director General of the Hydrographic Institute, Rear Admiral António Coelho Cândido.
The visit began at the Auditorium with the intervention of the Director General of the Hydrographic Institute, which was followed by the presentation of the new institutional film and by two interventions: the first one given by Commander Alves Gaspar referring to the theme "Cartography in the early days of the Navy" and the second, given by HI Technical Director, Commander Mesquita Onofre, on the cartography currently developed by HI, in the scope of the projects: "Mapping the Portuguese Sea", "Waterway of the Douro" and "Waterway of the Guadiana".
The visit continued to the "Cartography in the 700 years of the Navy" exhibition room, followed by the Navy's Meteorological and Oceanographic Center, with a presentation by the Head of the Center, Lieutenant Quaresma dos Santos, on the capacity for product development and support systems to make operational decision in support of civil emergency.
At the end of the visit, His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa signed the Book of Honor and received the institutional offer referring to the celebrations.
