Work with Hydrographic Institute participation considered the most cited in 2022-2023

Within the PLATMAR project (PTDC/GEO-GEO/0051/2014), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology and whose Principal Investigator was Rui Quartau (Hydrographic Institute/IDL), the sediments of the Santa Maria island shelf were characterized in terms of their nature and grain size, providing a unique opportunity to test sediment transport on the Santa Maria island shelf.

This work titled "Wave-influenced deposition of carbonate-rich sediment on the insular shelf of Santa Maria Island, Azores" was published in 2022 in the Sedimentology journal and is now considered one of the most cited works in 2022-2023.

It resulted from the work of an international multidisciplinary team, including the Hydrographic Institute, IDL, the University of the Azores, the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), Dunarea de Jos University of Galati (Romania), and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology. The first author of this work (Zhongwei Zhao) was a Ph.D. student of Rui Quartau.
