Doctoral Thesis Conducted at the Hydrographic Institute

Recently, Dr. Viviana Belvisi defended her Doctoral thesis, conducted at the Hydrographic Institute.

As part of the Doctoral Research Program in Geology, Dr. Viviana Belvisi defended her thesis via videoconference at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, titled "Sedimentary dynamics on the southern insular shelf of Madeira Island: insights from geophysical and sediment sampling data." This doctorate, funded by a grant from the Foundation for Science and Technology and developed in partnership with the Marine Geology Division of the Hydrographic Institute (IH), where she was supervised by Assistant Researcher Rui Quartau, began in February 2019 and was completed in March 2024. The candidate received her doctorate with distinction on July 24th.

During the defense, Dr. Viviana Belvisi presented the results of her research on sedimentary dynamics on the southern shelf of Madeira Island, providing a better understanding of sediment transport in that region. The results obtained are of great interest for the management of sand exploitation and the planning of anthropogenic constructions, such as aquaculture platforms and the installation of submarine cables.
