Official of Portuguese Navy will integrate research project in Antarctica

At the invitation of the Instituto Hidrográfico de la Marina (Spain), an officer from the Hydrographic Institute of the Portuguese Navy will participate in the GALILEO-IHM-3 Project, under the 2017-2018 Antarctic Campaign.
The project will take place on board the "Hespérides" Oceanographic research vessel between February 18 and March 12, 2018, with the objective of evaluating the European Galileo Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) service in the open service mode positioning and diffusion of time in the Antarctic region and to carry out hydrographic surveys, within the scope of the Spanish cartographic plan.
In this sense, it is planned to perform top-hydrographic surveys and GNSS Galileo observations in Punta Arenas (Chile), Ushuaia (Argentina) and in several sites of the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic peninsula.
The shipment of this military man on board the ship "Hespérides" comes under the cooperation between the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute and the Spanish Hydrographic Institute, which has been fostered in recent years and aims at mutual exchange of knowledge to improve methodologies and procedures of both institutions, making them more modern and effective.
