Military exchanges between the Portuguese Navy and Brazil
The First Lieutenant Luis Carlos dos Santos Melo, specialized in hydrography and oceanography by the Hydrographic Institute, boarded the Hydroceanographic Research Ship (NPqHo) Vital de Oliveira, from the Brazilian Navy, between November 14 and December 6, during the PIRATA BR 2017 commission.
This shipment comes from the agreement established during the IX Meeting between the Military Staff of the Portuguese Navy and the Navy of Brazil for the exchange of experiences and knowledge between the two Marines.
The objective of this mission was to study the ocean-atmosphere interactions in the Tropical Atlantic, within the framework of the international project "Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic", involving Brazil (INPE - National Institute for Space Research) United States of America (PMEL / NOAA - Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory / National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and France (IFREMER - Institut Français de Recherche et d'Exploitation de la Mer).
During the mission, four oceanographic buoys of the PIRATA network, based in the northeast area of Brazil, were established, and were carried out oceanographic and meteorological activities, by Brazilian researchers. It was possible to compare work methodologies, exchange experiences in the areas of seafaring and scientific research and learn about some of the most relevant projects underway in Brazil.
