Hydrographic Institute and Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere co-found the National Center for Oceanographic Data
The project for the establishment of the National Center for Oceanographic Data (CNDO) has been recognized by IOC/UNESCO as a supporting action for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. The actions are hierarchized into programs, projects, activities, and contributions. The projects consist of a set of activities developed at regional, national, and local levels to address the challenges of the program. The CNDO contributes to the challenge of "Creating a Digital Representation of the Ocean" and thus helps achieve the ocean we all desire.
The application to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 Program took place within the scope of the call 04/2022. After a lengthy evaluation process, the CNDO project was recognized for its merit, announced on June 8, 2023, during the World Oceans Day celebrations.
The National Center for Oceanographic Data (https://nodc-portugal.pt) aspires to be a unique access point to marine data from the Portuguese sea and a network of agents who have found their field of work in the ocean. It began its activities as a distributed model, with the Hydrographic Institute and the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere as founding members, but open to all those who want to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient ocean.
