iSphere Float collects data from storms Monica and Nelson
On March 27th, the iSphere Metocean® float, which had been deployed on March 5th by the Hydrographic Institute aboard the NRP D. Carlos I off the coast of Portimão, was recovered.
Over the course of more than 20 days, the float traveled along the South coast of the Iberian Peninsula, crossing storms Monica and Nelson. For about 15 days, it remained near the coast of Spain, off the coast of Huelva, with several recovery attempts made with the support of the Portuguese Navy and the National Maritime Authority in strict coordination with the Maritime Rescue of Huelva (Spain). Finally, on March 27, 2024, the float washed ashore in the region of Cádiz, where it was recovered by local police.
This mission aims to validate and calibrate the data of surface currents measured by high-frequency radar systems (HF) operating along the southern coast of Portugal and Spain, integrated into the MONIZEE network.
