Death of Admiral Ribeiro Pacheco
The Navy and the Hydrographic Institute deeply regret the death of Admiral João José de Freitas Ribeiro Pacheco and send their deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Admiral João Ribeiro Pacheco was General Director of the Hydrographic Institute from May 9, 1989, to April 3, 1991, and Chief of Staff of the Navy between March 28, 1994, and April 1, 1997, with a brilliant career at the service of the Navy.
He joined the Naval Academy in 1952 and throughout his career, he performed various roles at sea and on land. He commanded the NRP "Canopus" and the NRP Almirante Magalhães Corrêa, specializing in Communications and Special Marines, having commanded Detachment nº 7 of Special Marines, on a commission in Guinea, where he distinguished himself for his action in combat.
He was also Captain of the Ports of Cape Verde, commander of the Marine Corps, Superintendent of Personnel Services, Director of the National Defense Institute, among other positions.
Throughout his life, Admiral Ribeiro Pacheco was awarded several decorations, including the Order of the Tower and Sword, War Cross Medal, Military Order of Avis - Grand Cross, among others.
He passed away on the 27th of February, victim of a prolonged illness.
The mass for the body will be held in the Chapel of S. Roque today, March 2nd at 12:00 noon, after which the body will be taken to the crematorium in Alto de S. João.
