Director of the IH School of Hydrography and Oceanography selected for IBSC member

Captain-sea-and-war Leonel Pereira Manteigas, Director of the School of Hydrography and Oceanography (EHO) of the Hydrographic Institute was selected to be proposed by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) to its Member States, to fill an IHO seat in International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC).

The IBSC is a working group made up of ten experts of recognized merit, four from the International Hydrographic Organization, four from the International Federation of Geometers and two from the International Cartographic Association. As one of the OHI posts was vacant, Member States were invited to nominate candidates. Five applications from different countries were presented. After analyzing their Curriculum Vitae and considering the selection criteria and qualifications established, the IHO Secretariat and the IBSC President unanimously agreed to recommend to the Member States the selection of the Commander Leonel Pereira Manteigas. According to the rules, this selection will be approved within a month, unless some objection is presented by one of the Member States.

This selection came after the presentation to the IBSC, with two successful processes of recognition of the EHO Hydrography Courses, one with category A in 2017 and another with category B in 2018. The quality of the processes presented led to the Hydrographic Service of Colombia to request the School of Hydrography and Oceanography to advise on the process of recognition of their courses.

With this selection, Commander Pereira Manteigas, if no objection arises, will not only actively participate in the revision of the respective regulations, but also be one of the 10 elements of the IBSC that will carry out the analysis of hydrography and nautical cartography courses that, internationally may be proposed for recognition or for renewal of recognition.

This application and consequent selection, fits in with the intention of the Hydrographic Institute to have an increasingly active participation in the International Hydrographic Organization.
