Hydrographic Institute scholarship holder presents doctoral thesis

As part of the research work of the Doctoral Program carried out by Dr. Vanessa Morgado, a scholarship holder at the Hydrographic Institute (IH), today, March 6, she presented her thesis "Objective assessment of microplastic contamination of environmental areas" to the Director General of the IH, Rear Admiral Ramalho Marreiros.

This doctorate, funded by the University of Lisbon and carried out in partnership with IH's Marine Chemistry and Pollution Division, ran from April 2019 to July 2023, with the thesis having been defended with distinction and praise on February 15.

In this work, Dr. Vanessa presented the results obtained on the development of methodologies for the qualitative and quantitative characterization of microplastic contamination in Portuguese estuarine and coastal areas, which allow, for the first time, the objective determination of levels and trends of this contamination of the marine environment. The results produced in this way are potentially binding for the manager of this resource.
