In recent years, the Hydrographic Institute (HI), an organic unit of the Portuguese Navy, has developed advanced capabilities in the field of meteorological forecasting, has built observational networks along the coast and developed an advanced operational forecasting system. These valencies have now been concentrated in the new Meteorological and Oceanographic Naval Center (MONC), located in the Hydrographic Institute with the dependency of its General Director.
This center, is operated by 14 people in 4 thematic areas (Oceanography, Meteorology, Geospatial Information and War of Mines), and will produce fundamental meteorological forecast information to support the modern operations of the Navy and the National Maritime Authority.
Among the several developed products are evidenced those related to the prediction of the state of the sea, in different scales, places and depths, the impact diagrams in the ongoing mission, depending on the means employed. The citizen who uses the sea will also benefit from this center. Some of the forecast products will be made available through the Hydrographic Institute portal at www.hidrografico.pt.
