To illuminate the coast, aiding navigation, there are not only lighthouses...

There are around 2000 navigation aids such as lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and marks illuminating both the seashore and the interior of the ports of Portugal, and they all have a name.

These aids are represented in nautical charts and are meticulously described in a publication edited by the Hydrographic Institute, the List of Lights, Buoys, Beacons, and Fog Signals.

Regarding navigation safety, when abnormal behaviors are detected in these aids, such as changes in their light characteristics, positioning, or removal and/or installation of new aids, these situations are promptly disseminated through Coastal and Local Navigation Warnings. Subsequently, if the reported situation remains in effect, it will be included at the end of the month in the groups of Notices to Mariners.

We remind you that the List of Lights, Buoys, Beacons, and Fog Signals, along with nautical charts, is updated based on the information contained in the Notices to Mariners, so this publication should be regularly consulted.

If it was at sea that God mirrored the sky as Fernando Pessoa envisioned, then the lights of the navigation aids are the stars.
