Director General of the Hydrographic Institute visits Angola

The General Director of the Hydrographic Institute, Rear Admiral Carlos Ventura Soares, traveled to Luanda, Angola, accompanied by the Technical Director, Commander Miguel Bessa Pacheco. The visit, carried out from 6 to 9 December, took place simultaneously with the presence of the NRP “D.Carlos I” in that port, on a mission within the scope of the “Mar Aberto 2021” initiative, where he carried out hydrographic work on the approaches to the port of Luanda.

Rear Admiral Ventura Soares, after being received by the Ambassador of Portugal in Angola, Pedro Pessoa e Costa, had the opportunity to visit the Angolan Navy (MGA) in its hydrographic aspect (Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation), where, after deliver a lecture, awarded diplomas and imposed specialization badges on the five Angolan officers who attended the Technical Hydrography Course (OHI category B) at the IH School of Hydrography and Oceanography. He also visited the Interministerial Commission for the Delimitation and Demarcation of Maritime Spaces in Angola (CIDDEMA), following the previous collaboration, having given a lecture, on the occasion, to a wide audience. This visit to Luanda resulted in the signing of a collaboration protocol between the IH and the Hydrographic and Maritime Signaling Institute of Angola, IHSMA, within the scope of the development of common actions in maritime areas under Angola's sovereignty or jurisdiction, carried out in the presence of the secretary of State for the Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port Sector of Angola, Dr. Carlos Borges. It also resulted in the signing of another collaboration protocol in the fields of hydrography, oceanography, marine geology and marine chemistry between the IH and the National Institute of Fisheries and Marine Research (INIPM), in the presence of the Angolan executive's Secretary of State for Fisheries, Professor Hope of the Coast.

IH's commitment to safe navigation and marine sciences in Angola, in close collaboration with MGA, CIDDEMA, IHSMA and INIPM, has an enormous leverage potential with regard to these areas of knowledge. this Institute and the Navy are deeply committed to achieving concrete goals in the short, medium and long term. The hydrographic survey carried out in the bay of Luanda, which will allow the updating of the nautical chart of the main port of Angola in 2022, and the ondograph buoy anchored at the entrance to the bay of Luanda, with real-time information on maritime agitation and water temperature, these are two examples that show that “we are together” with Angola in this cooperation that is now being strengthened.
