Angola and Portugal sign protocol to boost shipping safety

A cooperation protocol between the Hydrographic and Maritime Marking Institute of Angola (IHSMA) and the Hydrographic Institute (IH) of Portugal was signed at the Luanda Port Academy. This collaboration between both institutes aims to update the Angolan nautical chart, develop cartography and hydrography and train staff and improve the safety of navigation in the African country.

The Director-General of the IHSMA, Manuel Narciso, and the Director-General of the IH, Rear-Admiral Carlos Ventura Soares, were the signatories of the protocol in a ceremony attended by the Angolan Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port sectors, Carlos Borges.

The Director General of the Hydrographic Institute of Portugal, Rear-Admiral Carlos Ventura Soares, noted that the protocol "is vast and also involves improving everything to do with maritime safety, cartography, oceanography, training," which is expected "by 2022.

Both institutions are expected to carry out, under this protocol, various activities in the areas of cartography, hydrography, nautical signage, oceanography and training of Angolan staff in order to strengthen Angola's maritime and port activities.
