The project "Development of volcanic island shelves: insights from Sta. Maria Island and implications on hazard assessment, habitat mapping and marine aggregates" intends to study the evolution of the insular shelf of Santa Maria island by answering three main questions:

1. How did the different geological processes modelled the current morphology of the shelf;
2. What are the factors that control the formation, distribution and thickness of the sedimentary bodies on the shelf;
3. What causes the landslides that occur on the edge of the shelf and how often should we expect them?
