JERICO-NEXT

The JERICO-NEXT project brings together 33 organizations from 15 countries with the main goal of strengthening and enlarging an European network of coastal observatories conducting the monitoring of coastal ocean areas of the European margin in the physical, biogeochemical and biological areas and to disseminate high quality environmental data and related information products.

IH contributes to the project through the Nazare Canyon Observatory (MONICAN), conducting a number of activities that have the following main objectives:

  • (a) to contribute to demonstrate the importance of the JERICO-NEXT monitoring network in supporting operational oceanography and numerical forecasting of the European coastal ocean areas, namely by showing how these observations can improve numerical forecasting capacities (through the skill assessment of numerical models or through data assimilation) or by bringing in evidence how numerical models can be used to design and optimize the monitoring networks;

  • (b) to monitor the area of influence of Nazare Canyon, assuring the quality of the data collected by the MONICAN observatory and providing the access to this data through the MONICAN web page http://monican.hidrografico.pt/en, developing the “Virtual Access” mechanism that is inscribed in this project.
