GUAD20 - GUADIANA: NAVIGABLE NATURAL HERITAGE

The "GUAD20 - Guadiana: Navigable Natural Heritage" project aimed to rehabilitate the navigability of the Guadiana River in the international section between Vila Real de S.to António and Pomarão, in safe conditions, as well as to rehabilitate existing port infrastructure on both banks.

Under this project the Hydrographic Institute was the entity responsible for producing the official hydrographic cartography of the Guadiana Waterway between Vila Real de S.to António and Pomarão, having carried out the following tasks

  • Topo-hydrographic survey;
  • Technical support for the redefinition of the navigation channel layout (Alcoutim to Pomarão);
  • Project of fluvial marking (Alcoutim to Pomarão);
  • Physicochemical characterization of sediments (Alcoutim to Pomarão);
  • Production of nautical cartography, river series (paper and digital).

  • All work completed, including the publication of the Nautical Cartography;
  • The topographic and hydrographic surveys took place between 2017 and 2020 totaling about 108 days of field work, 330 hours of soundings in which the vessels traveled approximately 1600 km in acquisition of bathymetric data, forming the basis for the remaining studies and work. The volume of data occupies more than 1 TB of information on disk;
  • The folio of the river series established for the Guadiana, consists of 2 charts, a total of 12 sheets in its paper format, and the corresponding number of cells in its electronic format;
  • The construction of the river nautical cartography took place between 2018 and 2020;
  • In June 2021, the nautical charts (CN) 26F21 (from the Guadiana international bridge to Alcoutim) and CN 26F22 (from Alcoutim to Pomarão) were published.
